“Arrogance of great robes” is a modern abstract painting that invites viewers to enter a deeper space of interpretation concerning humanity, power, status, ego, and the transformation of character. This painting is not intended to point to any particular individual or group. Rather, it serves as a reflection on the human tendency to become increasingly attached to academic titles, professions, positions, wealth, expertise, social status, and various forms of recognition. In the artist’s interpretation, everything that symbolizes a person’s greatness may be regarded as a “robe of greatness.” It may take the form of an academic degree, religious title, profession, government position, social influence, wealth, popularity, or public recognition. In itself, such a robe is not necessarily something negative. However, when this sense of greatness begins to change the way a person sees themselves and others, the robe of greatness can gradually become a source of arrogance.

Arrogance rarely appears suddenly. It can grow gradually when a person begins to place excessive confidence in their own title, position, or status. Someone who was once humble may change after attaining a particular position. They may begin to believe that they are more intelligent, more righteous, more important, more influential, or more deserving of being heard than others. Differences of opinion may then be interpreted as acts of opposition. Those who do not follow their wishes may be viewed as enemies, while criticism that could actually serve as an opportunity for self-reflection is instead perceived as an attack on their dignity. At that point, titles and positions are no longer used as instruments of service, but become shields designed to protect the ego.

In more extreme circumstances, the “robe of greatness” may even be used to justify destructive behavior. When confronted with criticism, a person may hide behind their identity as an expert, scholar, respected public figure, official, wealthy individual, leader, or someone who believes they possess superior knowledge. It is as though their title or position gives them the right to always be correct. Others are considered ignorant simply because they hold different opinions. Criticism directed at them is perceived as an insult, while the criticism they direct toward others can become a degrading attack. This is where the true danger of arrogance lies: a person is no longer defending what is right, but has begun defending their own sense of greatness.

The painting also speaks about a deeply human transformation: from being nobody in particular to becoming someone with power, and then gradually losing perspective of who they truly are. Before possessing a title, position, wealth, or popularity, a person may be able to see others simply as fellow human beings. Yet after putting on the “robe of greatness,” their perception may change. They begin to see the world vertically—who stands above and who stands below. Those with lower positions are considered less important, while those with higher status are regarded as more worthy of respect. Yet human value has never been determined by position, wealth, academic titles, or popularity.

Visually, the dense accumulation of strong color strokes and abstract forms on the right side of the painting may be interpreted as a representation of the many different “robes of greatness” worn by human beings. The layered colors, colliding forms, and powerful movement express ambition, power, ego, status, prestige, and the various identities that people so often take pride in. The more robes a person wears, the greater the possibility that they may begin to believe they possess a special superiority. Yet this accumulation also contains an irony: something that appears enormous and magnificent from a human perspective may lose all of its significance when viewed within the greater perspective of life and divine power.

On the left side of the painting, there is a more expansive visual space, with abstract fields that appear to press against and dominate the accumulation of forms on the opposite side in a diagonal movement. In the artist’s interpretation, this area symbolizes the power of God, which stands above every form of human greatness. No matter how high a person’s position may be, how many titles they possess, how great their wealth may be, or how many people admire them, everything remains within the boundaries of a temporary human existence. In the presence of divine power, human beings return to their essential nature as small and limited creatures. No title can make a human being greater than their Creator.

Therefore, the statement that “in the presence of God, the arrogance of the robe of greatness is nothing more than worthless waste” represents a philosophical critique of human pride. The work does not condemn titles, professions, positions, wealth, or achievement themselves. All of these can become meaningful and beneficial when used to serve others. The real problem arises when people turn their achievements into reasons to look down upon others. A position should be a responsibility, knowledge should be a source of enlightenment, wealth should become a means of sharing, and a title should represent a responsibility to create value and benefit others. When all of these become merely tools for satisfying the ego, such greatness ultimately loses its meaning.

Ultimately, “Arrogance of great robes” invites us to recognize that human beings never become truly great simply because of what they carry or display on the outside. True greatness is revealed by how a person treats others when they possess power. A truly knowledgeable person does not need to constantly prove that they are the smartest. A person who genuinely holds authority does not need to humiliate others to demonstrate their power. Someone who is truly respected does not need to force others to respect them. And a person who is genuinely close to God should become increasingly humble, not increasingly arrogant.

In the end, “Arrogance of great robes” is a meditation on human mortality and impermanence. Titles can disappear, positions can end, wealth can change hands, popularity can fade, power can collapse, and the human body will eventually return to the earth. What remains is not the length of the titles once carried, nor the height of the positions once occupied, but the traces of goodness a person has left behind in life. For the noblest robe of greatness is not the one that makes a person appear superior before others, but the one that enables them to remain humble before God while continuing to respect and value their fellow human beings.

Through “Arrogance of great robes” the artist does not merely paint forms and colors, but presents a question that may be more important than all the titles we possess: when all of those robes of greatness are finally removed, who are we truly?
