“The Welfare We Hope For” invites viewers to enter a deeper space of personal interpretation about hope, struggle, destiny, and the human journey toward a better life. I do not wish to provide a single interpretation that limits the viewer’s experience, because every person has a different life story, background, and journey. However, from my perspective as a painter, living a prosperous and fulfilling life is a dream shared by almost every human being. We all desire a life that is safer, more comfortable, healthier, financially secure, and filled with better prospects for the future. The challenge is that not everyone is able to achieve such well-being in the same way or with the same results.
For me, well-being has several fundamental meanings: prosperity or sufficiency, security, comfort, and health. These four elements are important parts of human life. Yet true well-being is not only about material possessions. Peace of mind, a harmonious family, good health, a sense of security, opportunities for personal growth, and the ability to enjoy life with gratitude are also essential aspects of well-being. A person may possess great wealth but still lack inner peace. Conversely, someone living a simple life may experience profound happiness because they have good health, a harmonious family, and a heart filled with gratitude. Through this work, therefore, I wish to open a space for reflection—that well-being does not necessarily have the same definition or measurement for every human being.
Visually, I imagine the blue and turquoise colors dominating the center of the painting as a journey toward hope. Their flowing forms suggest movement in a particular direction, like a path through life that continuously carries us toward something we hope to achieve. Blue conveys a sense of depth, calmness, and the vastness of hope, while the green surrounding it may be interpreted as a symbol of life, growth, and opportunities for development. The areas of white create a sense of light and openness, as though suggesting the possibility of finding a way forward beyond various limitations. For me, the path toward well-being is not always clear from the beginning, but we must continue moving forward in order to discover new possibilities in life.
Within this journey are various forms, colors, and strokes layered upon one another. I see them as a representation of the fact that the path toward well-being is never truly straight. Some paths are easy, while others are winding. There are moments of success, moments of failure, and times when a person must pause before finding the strength to move forward again. Every human being has a different destiny and a different journey. Sometimes, two people may make almost the same effort and work with equal determination, yet achieve very different results. This is part of life—something that cannot always be controlled. Therefore, I see well-being not merely as a final destination, but also as a long process that teaches us patience, perseverance, acceptance, and the courage to keep trying.
In my view, a prosperous and fulfilling life is the result of a long journey that requires determination, discipline, willingness, and hard work. The same principle applies to a nation. A society in which people enjoy a high level of well-being is not built overnight. Behind that prosperity lies a long history of education, hard work, discipline, development, sacrifice, and a collective willingness to continually improve the quality of life. The same is true in our personal lives. Few great achievements truly come without a process. What appears to be success today is often the result of a long struggle that others never see.
For this reason, I believe that well-being that is merely hoped for without effort will remain an illusion. Dreams need action in order to move toward reality. For me, prayer, determination, and hard work are three elements that can move together throughout this journey. Prayer provides inner strength and hope, determination gives us the motivation to move forward, while hard work becomes the tangible action that brings us closer to our goals. Human beings cannot guarantee the final outcome of every effort they make, but we still have the choice to keep trying, learning, improving ourselves, and refusing to surrender to circumstances.
This work is also a reflection on the differences between each person’s journey toward well-being. I do not see someone who has not yet succeeded as someone who has not made an effort. Likewise, I do not believe that success should automatically be regarded as proof that one person is better than another. Every human being has a different starting point, opportunities, challenges, abilities, environment, and path in life. Therefore, life should not be measured solely by who becomes wealthy or successful the fastest, but also by how a person travels through the process without losing their humanity, hope, and sense of gratitude.
Ultimately, “The Welfare We Hope For” is, for me, a reflection on the human desire to overcome limitations and discover a better way of living. The strokes of color, abstract forms, and visual movements within this work represent an ongoing journey—a journey that is not always easy, yet always holds the possibility of moving toward something better. I want viewers to discover their own life journeys within this painting: perhaps their struggles with financial circumstances, hopes for their families, dreams and ambitions, concerns about health, aspirations for the future, or simply the humble desire to live a more peaceful life.
Well-being, ultimately, is not merely something to wait for, but something to strive for. I believe that hope loses its meaning when it is not accompanied by action. Yet when hope moves together with prayer, determination, perseverance, and hard work, something that initially seems distant and difficult is not necessarily impossible to achieve. The final outcome may not always be exactly what we imagined, but every sincere step we take still holds value in the journey of life. “The Welfare We Hope For” is a reminder to me, and to anyone who encounters this work, that as long as human beings still have hope and the willingness to struggle forward, there is always a path that may open toward a better life.
