“Growing old, never growing up” emerges from a reflection on one of the quiet contradictions of human life: the passage of time is inevitable, but inner growth is not.
As years accumulate, the body moves forward through time, while the development of knowledge, awareness, wisdom, and emotional maturity may not necessarily follow at the same pace. A person can grow older while remaining psychologically attached to an earlier version of themselves—holding onto youthful desires, prolonged fantasies, familiar habits, or imagined futures without fully recognizing how much time has already passed.
The work considers this tension between chronological age and inner maturity. Time continues regardless of whether it is consciously used. Days become years, years become memories, and the accumulation of age can create the appearance of progress even when one's inner world has remained largely unchanged.
Yet the painting does not seek to judge what maturity should look like, nor does it define what constitutes a meaningful life. Its visual language remains deliberately open, allowing forms, gestures, contrasts, and spaces to generate different associations for different viewers. What one person may perceive as stagnation, another may see as persistence, innocence, freedom, nostalgia, or the refusal to surrender a youthful imagination.
This ambiguity is important. “Growing old, never growing up” is not simply a criticism of remaining young at heart. Instead, it raises a more nuanced question about the relationship between time, awareness, and becoming.
What happens when the years increase but curiosity does not?
What happens when dreams remain abundant but experience is not transformed into wisdom?
And perhaps most importantly, how do we know whether we are truly growing, rather than simply getting older?
The painting leaves these questions deliberately unresolved.
For some viewers, it may become a reflection on wasted time. For others, it may evoke nostalgia, unfinished ambitions, or the tension between who they once were and who they are becoming. Someone else may encounter an entirely different meaning within its forms and visual relationships.
In this openness lies the work's invitation: not to condemn immaturity, but to pause and look at the passage of one's own life.
Because growing older is automatic.
Growing wiser, however, may require conscious participation.
