“Helping Oneself” emerges from a reflection on personal responsibility and the continuous journey of becoming. Past, present, tomorrow, and the future can be understood as pages within an unfolding narrative—each shaped, directly or indirectly, by the choices, actions, and responses that came before. What we encounter today is therefore not an isolated moment, but part of a much longer process of becoming.

The work does not attempt to offer a fixed moral statement about success, failure, struggle, or achievement. Instead, it opens a space to consider the relationship between agency, consequence, and transformation. A person may find themselves at a difficult point in life, while another may appear to be standing in a place of achievement. Neither condition exists entirely outside the accumulation of previous decisions, experiences, circumstances, and actions.

Within this perspective, the painting turns toward a difficult but empowering question: when life becomes overwhelming, who ultimately has the capacity to initiate change?

The answer suggested by the title is not necessarily a rejection of other people or of the importance of support. Rather, it points toward the moment when external help can no longer substitute for an individual's own willingness to move. Others may offer a hand, encouragement, knowledge, opportunity, or companionship—but the decision to rise remains deeply personal.

The visual language of the work, with its contrasting fields, energetic gestures, and unresolved spatial relationships, deliberately avoids providing a single visual explanation. The forms may evoke different experiences for different viewers: struggle, resistance, balance, reconstruction, isolation, movement, or perhaps something entirely unrelated. Their significance is intentionally left open.

This openness is central to the work. “Helping Oneself” is not intended to tell the viewer what the painting means, but to create a moment in which the viewer may encounter their own understanding of responsibility and resilience.

Perhaps the work speaks about rising after a fall. Perhaps it is about accepting the consequences of one's past. Perhaps it is about beginning again. Or perhaps it raises a more uncomfortable question: if our present is partly shaped by what we have done before, what are we doing today to shape the person we will become tomorrow?

The painting ultimately leaves that question with the viewer.

Because the journey of life continues to be written, and the next page has not yet been determined.
