“Against black” is a modern abstract painting that reflects on one of the most difficult and continuous struggles within human life: the struggle against negative thoughts, destructive impulses, and the inner voices that can lead a person away from goodness. The work invites viewers to enter its visual tension and discover their own interpretation, rather than offering a single definitive meaning. In the artist’s interpretation, however, the painting speaks about the ongoing effort to recognize and resist the “darkness” that can quietly enter the human mind and heart.
The human mind and heart are constantly responding to information, persuasion, temptation, desire, doubt, and countless influences from both within and outside ourselves. Some lead toward what is good, while others may encourage destructive thoughts and harmful actions. There are also moments when the distinction between right and wrong becomes unclear, leaving a person somewhere between what can be understood as “white” and “black.” The energetic arrangement of sweeping strokes, splashes, intersections, and contrasting visual movements in the painting creates a sense of continuous struggle. Nothing appears completely still; forms seem to push against one another, suggesting an inner condition that is constantly being challenged and negotiated.
For the artist, the “black” represents the negative whispers within the self—thoughts and impulses that can weaken conscience, create doubt, encourage harmful behavior, or gradually lead a person toward destructive choices. Such darkness does not always arrive loudly or reveal itself immediately. It can enter quietly, influence the way we think, distort our judgment, and create uncertainty within the heart. This is what makes the struggle so difficult: the greatest challenges are sometimes not external enemies, but forces that emerge from within and remain difficult to recognize until their influence has already grown.
Against black therefore represents a noble and lifelong struggle to become a better human being. There is no particular moment when a person can declare that the struggle is permanently finished. As long as human beings continue to think, desire, choose, and respond to the world around them, there will always be influences that must be questioned and resisted. Falling into negativity may sometimes happen gradually, while resisting it requires awareness, courage, discipline, and a conscious commitment to choose what is right. In this sense, becoming a truly strong person is not simply about achieving success or overcoming others, but about having the strength to overcome the destructive tendencies within oneself.
Ultimately, the painting carries a simple yet profound principle: the desire to become a good person can become the foundation for resisting the darkness within. Goodness is not merely an idea, but a choice that must repeatedly be made through thought, attitude, and action. “Fighting the Darkness” invites the viewer to reflect on their own inner struggle: What voices influence us? Which thoughts should we follow, and which should we resist? How often do we recognize the darkness before it controls our choices? The answers belong to each individual. For the artist, the greatest victory is not the absence of darkness, but the courage to continue fighting it—throughout life, with the determination to remain human, remain good, and bring the better potential within oneself into the world.
