“Choosing to Be Good” is a modern painting that speaks about one of the most fundamental freedoms within the human experience: the freedom to determine who we are and how we choose to live our lives. Throughout life, human beings are confronted with countless possibilities. We can choose any path, become whoever we want to become, and make decisions that lead us toward goodness—or in the opposite direction. There is not always someone standing before us to forbid a certain choice, nor is there always someone forcing us to make one. Ultimately, there is an inner space where we come face to face with ourselves—and it is within that space that choice becomes deeply personal. This painting does not view “being good” as something automatically inherent in human nature, but rather as a conscious decision that we continue to make, again and again.

In the artist’s interpretation, choosing to be a good person has its own challenges. Goodness does not mean that life will suddenly become free from problems, temptations, disappointments, injustice, or circumstances that encourage us to surrender to another side of ourselves. On the contrary, when a person consciously chooses to remain good from within, they are also accepting the consequences of that choice. They understand that being good is not always easy, does not always receive recognition, and does not necessarily produce immediate benefits for themselves. Yet they continue to choose it because they understand the inherent value of goodness itself. This is where the meaning of “choosing to be good” becomes deeper: goodness is not merely an outward behavior observed by others, but an inner awareness that allows a person to continue choosing a particular path even when no one is watching and no one is forcing them to do so.

Visually, the work presents spontaneous, figurative forms that are at once simple and unusual, set against white areas interacting with a pinkish-purple background, accompanied by accents of black, yellow, orange, brown, and gray. These visual characteristics create the impression of a world taking shape from a multitude of possibilities. There is something light and almost dreamlike about it, yet beneath the simplicity of its forms lies a deeply human question: when every choice seems open before us, what kind of choice do we ultimately make? The artist does not intend to confine every form, line, or color to a single fixed meaning. Instead, the irregularity, spontaneity, and openness of the visual language allow viewers to enter the work through their own experiences, perspectives, and understanding.

Ultimately, “Choosing to Be Good” is not a painting that tells us we must be good because of rules, pressure, or the expectations of our surroundings. Rather, it invites us to question something simple yet fundamental: when we are truly free to choose, why do we choose to be good? The answer, of course, will be different for each individual. For the artist, the answer begins with the awareness that goodness holds its greatest value when it emerges from a sincere choice—not because we are forced to do so, not because we seek praise, and not because we fear the judgment of others. Being good is a choice. And when that choice comes from the deepest awareness within us, we do not merely practice goodness; we begin to understand, accept, and live the meaning of what it truly means to be good.

Within the viewer’s own space of interpretation, the work may ultimately unfold into a more personal question: If no one prevents us from becoming bad, and no one forces us to become good, then who truly determines the choices we make?
